About The Conon Hotel

Historic Hotel Reborn

Our family is delighted to have been able to breathe new life into the old Conon Hotel, a listed building which dates back to 1780, before the village grew up around it.

There was no bridge across the Conon River when the hotel – then a coaching inn – was first built; just a ferry, known as the “Scuddel”, which transported travellers to and from Maryburgh village on the opposite bank.

A Lot of Water under the Conon Bridges

The first bridge over the River Conon, necessitated by the importance of the river crossing point for transportation to the north, was designed by renowned engineer Thomas Telford and built between 1807 and 1809. Later came a railway bridge, opened in 1863, and ultimately the current road bridge replaced the demolished Telford bridge in the late 1970s.

Proximity to the river, which has some enticing fishing beats with the promise of good catches, meant the Conon Hotel was once a favourite with anglers. They’re starting to drift back again, and we heartily welcome fisherfolk with all their tackle in tow.

The Conon Hotel has witnessed many changes over the centuries, the original structure having been altered and added to by successive generations of landlords. It’s latest make-over has renovated and restored the hotel to a high standard worthy of the most discerning modern guest.

Our Home and a Community Hub

We were saddened by the state of the once thriving hotel which had fallen into serious disrepair – almost dilapidation – when we found it had been put on the market in 2019. It’s now become our home and a popular vibrant community hub with its pub-restaurant, coffee shop, garden terrace and bar lounge.

The hotel has nine stylish rooms with en suite bathrooms and touches of luxury – two of them with their own lounge and separate bedroom.

Staffed by locals, provisioned by local growers and producers, we regard the reborn Conon Hotel as an investment in the community and a future legacy for our family.
